Data Blanks and the 'No Red Flags' Trap in Vietnamese Youth Football Scouting

On the stand of a stadium in central Vietnam, during a group-stage match of the national U-19 championship, the analyst's tablet showed a table that was almost empty. The first-half ball-recovery column was blank. The high-speed running column was blank. The share of passes into the final third was blank. Twenty minutes later, the scouting meeting produced a single line: "No risks identified."

Nobody ever checked that blank. It existed because the data-capture system did not run during that half. Analysts have a name for this: silent failure. One processing stage returns an empty list, and every stage after it reads the empty list as "nothing wrong here." When the last reader is a coach working against the clock, the blank becomes reassurance.

Vietnamese football is in a phase of rapid data adoption. The 2026/25 V.League 1 season comprises 14 clubs playing 26 rounds, according to the schedule published by the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company. A group of better-resourced clubs such as Hanoi, Thep Xanh Nam Dinh, Viettel and Cong An Ha Noi have invested in GPS tracking devices, subscribed to international data platforms and hired full-time analysts. But the data infrastructure is not evenly spread. The First Division, the U-19 and U-21 championships and most regional youth competitions have virtually no automated tracking.

That means at the lowest tier of the football pyramid, where talent is actually produced, blank cells are the default state. Scouting departments still work from video, from the naked eye and from handwritten notes. That approach is perfectly acceptable, provided it is declared honestly.

The problem lies elsewhere. A blank cell and a zero are two different facts: a zero is the outcome of a measurement, while a blank is the outcome of not being able to measure. In a data table, the two are usually formatted identically. A striker with four shots and two goals will show a 50 percent conversion rate. That number is arithmetically correct and football-wise meaningless. A full-back with only two recorded matches will show either a very high or a very low duel success rate, depending on which two opponents he happened to face.

Based on my experience tracking matches at youth level over many years, I always set a hard threshold before reading any metric. In the summer of 2026, following a U-20 side through eight matches in Germany, I built a 47-metric system for 23 players and timestamped every measurement. The rule was simple: below 450 minutes of play, a metric may only be used to describe, never to conclude. A blank cell in my system is always written as "insufficient information," and never filled with a zero just to complete the table.

The most worrying thing in scouting is not a report full of blanks. The pressure to deliver a verdict before the transfer window shuts drives people to fill blanks with zeros, with estimates, or with the opinion of an intermediary. Noise from agents and brokers thickens that filling, because a pretty file always sells better than an honest one.

To me, the period when a young player is frozen out — a long injury, a demotion to the reserves, a disappearance from the matchday squad — is not a trough to be erased from the file. Six frozen months are where value settles, and where technical character is forged in silence. Skipping that phase is another form of silent failure.

The value of a map lies in the lines left blank, not in the ink already drawn. The map of the lower divisions is still there; few people have the patience to dig. Modern football does not lack spectators, it lacks people who read footprints on melted snow. Every strong generation of players begins as a generation of archaeologists who know how to wait.

What Vietnamese football needs to do is less dramatic than it sounds. Every scouting report should carry one mandatory line stating the minutes and matches behind it. Every blank cell should remain blank, labelled "insufficient information." Every data system should raise an alarm when a match returns an empty list, instead of letting an analyst discover it too late at the final step. The clubs willing to do this will hold the biggest advantage exactly where few bother to look: youth competitions, lower-division teams, and players who have never appeared in any statistical table.
